BASICS Partners with
University of Ghana - School of Social Work
In May 2006, the Department of Social
Work at the University of Ghana has identified BASICS International
as one of the places where students can have their field practice.
Fieldwork is to give students the opportunity to put theories
learnt into practice to enhance their efficiency as professional
Social Workers before they graduate.

Free Dental Clinic at Nana's House for 250 children
On May 24th, 2006, University of Ghana, Dental School at Korle
Bu Hospital parked their mobile dental clinic on the premises
of BASICS and conducted free dental check-ups and taught the
children preventative care.
The event was organized by Dr. Ababio and Dr. Frema Dapaah.
All children were examined in the mobile van, and recommended
for treatment. On July 21st, Dr. Dapaah returned to treat 57
children, treatment included fillings, tooth removal, cleaning,
scaling and gum work. |

Interns from Michigan
State University
May 2006, six students from Michigan
State School of Social Work; Floresha Foreman, Alicia Love,
Monica White and Christine Miraglia began a four (4) weeks internship
at Nana's House. |

Delegation from US Embassy,
Ghana visit Nana's House On
June 13th, 2006, the Consular for Public Relations; Mary Johnson
and a delegation from her office visited Nana's House.
Madam Johnson commissioned, the Water Tank, Computers and Water
Filters that was part of a grant given to Nana's House. Scholarships
for 15 Senior Secondary Students was also rewarded. Consular
Johnson, also donated school supplies, games, toys and candy
to the children. |

Church of Latter Day Saints
Donates to Nana's House
Members of the Latter Day Saints donated
a truck load of goods to Nana's House. Items included toys,
bath towels, stationary, books, toiliteries, rice, cooking oil
and many other items. |

WISE and BASICS join forces
to empower women and children
WISE, a Ghanaian non-governmental, non-profit
organization dedicated to providing counseling and support services
to women and children survivors of violence. To achieve these
goals WISE works in cooperation with partners and clients to
develop culture-specific and community based solutions.
Clinical Psychologists, Counselors and Advocacy workers are
assigned to NANA'S HOUSE. . |

Anonymous Donor makes
generous donations to Nana's House
A good samartian, who we like to call
"A Quiet Friend" made a very generous donation to Nana's
House. The donation enabled BASICS to purchase two (2) computers,
and cover many adminstrative costs such as: paying a computer
tutor and paying teacher and volunteer stipends. The donation
also helped us purchase an airline ticket for a student who
received an academic scholarship to attend university in Morocco.

Asamoah Gyan
"Black Stars' Striker visits Nana's House After returning home from the World
Cup in Germany, Striker Asamoah Gyan paid a courtesy call to
Nana's House. Asamoah scored Ghana's first ever goal in the
World Cup ( Czech vs. Ghana). His goal was also noted as the
fastest goal at the 2006 World Cup. Asamoah Gyan visited the
center and offered words of encouragement to the children saying
" you must finish school first and then pursue your dreams".
The children presented Gyan with a citation and dressed him
with a BASICS cap and tee-shirt. Before leaving Asamoah kicked
around with the children; showing off some new tricks.
N.B:The
Black Stars defeated the USA 2-1 in the World Cup.

Children visit Slave Castles
in Cape Coast
On August 10th, 2006, an excursion was
organized for 45 children to visit the Slave Castles in Cape
Coast in the Central Region of Ghana. Children were treated
to lunch; a local dish of Kenkey and fish. A buffet of snacks
was supplied all day long. Click here to read some of the children
stories. The trip was sponsored by Landtours, Ghana who donated
the beautiful air conditioned bus and Co- workers of Springfield
Gardens Day Care Center, USA, sponsored the food, snacks, and
admission cost to the Castles.

Landtours Ghana donates bus for children's excursion
Landtours Managing Director; Mona Boyd,
donated a chartered air conditioned bus for 45 children to travel
to Cape Coast on August 10th, 2006. . Mrs. Boyd stated she wanted
to do something for BASICS and felt this was a great opportunity.

October 10th,
2006 Student receives scholarship
to attend University. Evans Krah, is BASICS first college bound
student. Evans is the recipient of an academic scholarship to
study Economics at the University of Rabat in Morocco. |
