Starbury sneakers debut at B.A.S.I.C.S (B.A.S.I.C.S achievement award)

Motivate, Inspire-
BASICS programs are designed to do just that- Motivate and INSPIRE. Many children are victims of child labor, or cycles of illiteracy. Children placed under our program normally struggle with attendance, performance and order. Conforming to a daily routine of attending school daily or being punctual , doing homework, respecting teachers, respecting rules- is far from the norm for most of the children on our program. Due to their former occupations and lifestyles, these simple day to day tasks – are great accomplishments- that deserve recognition and rewards. . Many of the children are coming to school way behind with many hurdles to overcome, and ABC’s and 123’s is not sufficient to address their real issues or to motivate them to learn.
We believe if we offer incentives to get disadvantaged students to perform well and care about their schooling, that's what counts. To increase attendance, and punctuality, and performance, BASICS International initiated reward programs:
Weekly spelling test are conducted each Friday. Students are given 10 words at the beginning of the week. On Friday, they are tested on their ability to spell, define, and use words in a sentence. Winners are given a choice of various prizes; tee-shirts, toys, games and/or books. At the end of the term (12 weeks) students compete in a jumbo spelling test. Children are tested on 120 words which they learned throughout the term. Students compete with their peers to spell, define and use in a sentence. Winners are rewarded with AM/FM Tape/CD Players.

Children are also rewarded for their attendance and conduct.

In January, 38 students were rewarded with a pair of brand new sneakers by Starbury. Children were given a card which contained 20 stickers. During a three month period, if they were late or absent, or misbehaved they would loose a sticker. The rule was that you could NOT loose more than 4 stickers. By the end of the term; 38 students were awarded the prize. Some students never lost one sticker. This was a great incentive, since most of the children never had a brand new pair of footwear prior to this.

Last term another initiative program was launched “I am my brothers Keeper”. Each class had a responsibility to make sure that their classmates attend school regularly and on time. If one student was late or absent –the class lost a sticker. Class 6 came in first place with Class 5 in second place. Other students from other classes were also rewarded for their great efforts despite their overall class performance. Winners were rewarded with a weekend trip to a resort.

• After a while, you're not coming to school so you can win a radio or trip. You're coming because you realize you're learning."
