The American Foundation For Vision Awareness
re-released this important statement, "80% of what a child
will learn in school comes through his or her eyesight."
100% of reading, board work and teacher demonstrations
in the classroom are visual. With these statistics, it
is safe to say that children who have better vision will
also be better readers, be better students and have better
grades and test scores. Children with better vision will
also have a higher self-esteem and perform better in sports
and other subjects such as music and art. “Right to See”
- Open the eyes of a child, by providing him/her with
an eye examination and glasses. Many children learning
abilities is being hindered due to poor eye sight.
In 2007, BASICS launched a new program which will directly
affect a child ability to excel in school. BASICS holistic
approach to changing the lives of so many underprivileged
children in Ghana, West Africa- has NO limits.
“Right to See” solicits support to open the
eyes of a child, by providing him/her with an eye examination
and glasses. Many children learning abilities is being
hindered due to poor eye sight. $20.00 will provide a
child with an eye exam and glasses in Ghana.
In February 2008, Prince Agyekum; a 5 year old was the
first recipient of this program. Two volunteers from the
United Kingdom; Michelle, and Becky decided to sponsor
Prince after realizing that he was severely struggling
with his eyesight. One week, after receiving his eyeglasses,
Prince has been sighted reciting his alphabets, numbers
and writing in his tablet. Special education teacher;
Michelle states Prince is a very clever boy, however it
was all being hindered because he couldn't see his work.
Inspired by Prince's development another volunteer;
John from Ireland used funds he raised at home to pay
for 150 children to have eye examinations. Others spoke
of raising money to pay for the eyeglasses for those needing.
Stay tuned...
