The Environmental Awareness Program was launched in February
2008.
150 children were taught what recycling is, and the effects
of waste to their environment. The program was initiated
and facilitated by Program Director; Allotey Bruce Konuah
who explained to the children “ Waste, and how we
choose to handle it, affects our world's environment --
that's YOUR environment, everything that surrounds you
including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things”.
He further explained that we all need a healthy environment
for our own health; you can understand why effective
waste management is so important to YOU and everyone
else. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled
to be sure that it does not harm your environment and
your health.
Children were taught how they can make a difference
to the environment and their seaside abodes like most
working class communities that faced waste disposal
challenges, in particular empty water sachet bags.
They were taught how this waste can be recycled and
its commercial potential.
The group was divided in teams of four; and collectors
are rewarded
based on how much they collect.
In addition to learning about recycling and environment
awareness, the project taught the groups about teamwork,
peer assessment and appraisal.
The Recycling project started with a
lot of enthusiasm and by the end of the week the children
had managed to collect 127kg (30 bags) worth of plastic
from the streets. This was sent to a plastics recycling
plant. Profits varied from 1-3 Ghana Cedis per group.
