F.A.Q's

On 1st October 2005, BASICS International opened the doors to a multi purpose center. NANA'S HOUSE', located in Chorkor (a local fishing community in Accra). The mission of Nana's House is to FILL the gaps, which have played a major role in hindering the growth of our children under the Back2School sponsorship program.

Our mission to remove children from the streets and place them in classrooms may appear to be a great goal and accomplishment, but everything has a price to pay. Most of these children were bread winners in their families and taking them away from the streets has caused loss of incomes in many homes. Families are not prepared to bear the additional expenses involved in sending their children to school, such as providing uniforms, stationary, books, shoes or feeding them breakfast or lunch,. This set back will affect the child in many ways. Either he/she will be forced to quit school and return to work, or go to school hungry and without the tools he/she needs to learn.

Many children are repeating their grades due to the high truancy rate, and when asked why were you absent from school so much? The reply is very common. My mother had no money.

Nana's House is a safe haven for our children to come everyday, to receive a balanced meal, which in many cases will be their only meal of the day. Nana's House is a venue, where children do their homework, under supervision. Many children come from homes where both parents are illiterate and don't see the importance of their child's education. This problem is also causing children not to excel in school and eventually be held back.

At Nana's House children will have access to books in our Library, computers, sewing, music, language, arts, sports, and other vocatonal training.
Children engage in weekly Bible study and group discussions to address social issues such as teenage pregnacy, HIV/AIDS, health and hygiene, etiquette, career planning and other life skills. Counseling is offered to children whom have been victims of abuse ( rape, mental and physical abuse). The rights of children is a top priorty at BASICS International.

Ultimately, Nana's House is a second home for our children. We will always provide our children a safe place to play and learn, and decrease their chances of returning to their former occupations. A place where they will receive Guidance, Support, Safety, Nourishment and GODS LOVE most of all.
