The BACK2SCHOOL program
targets children as young as 5 years old; rescuing them from
child labor/trafficking, illiteracy, child slavery, and even
prostitution, thereby enabling them to attend Primary and Senior
Secondary School.
The sponsorship program covers school fees, PTA fees, any levies
collected from the schools, uniforms, bags, books and stationary.
The enrollment rate for children entering primary school is
about 70%, however, there is a rapid decline in the attendance
rate by the end of the first term. There are certain factors
driving the low attendance rate, i.e. high school fees, lack
of money in households and lack of food which causes children
to return to the streets to work.
As a result of our investment in school sponsorships, approximately
500 children in Accra as well as in rural communities outside
of the capital city are now attending school. BASICS is now
at the forefront of empowering communities through education.
BASICS programs are showing how the education of children plays
a crucial role in the fight against poverty and the regeneration
of communities through education of disadvantaged youth. Strong
emphasis is placed on transitioning youths who are unaccustomed
to the demands, discipline curriculum or structure of an academic
environment. They are equipped with the basic skills and are
nurtured to learn to cope in their new surroundings and to make
the assimilation to mainstream schools.
Our transition classes prepares children all of ages for their
first day at school. After working diligently for five years
to ensure hundreds of children are given the chance to attend
school, in 2005 BASICS moved to a new level.
